TimeTestedInfo ||US inflation eases in June on lower energy costs

Wholesale inflation in the United States eased in June 2026 as energy costs fell on hopes of a lasting resolution to the Middle East war, government data showed on Wednesday. However, fighting has since resumed in the region.

The US Producer Price Index (PPI) for final demand dropped by 0.3 per cent month-on-month, marking the first such contraction since August 2025, according to the Bureau of Labour Statistics.

Compared with a year ago, the PPI was up 5.5 per cent last month, a smaller increase than the 6.0 per cent uptick recorded in May.

Despite the positive print, economic analysts warn that the relief might be short-lived.

The pullback in June came as goods costs cooled, logging their biggest decline since mid-2022. Energy prices in particular tumbled by 6.4 per cent during the month. Wholesale gasoline costs dropped by 12 per cent, while prices for diesel, jet fuel, and other petroleum products also registered significant declines.

Global oil prices have been highly volatile since US-Israel strikes targeting Iran in late February 2026 sparked Tehran’s retaliation, plunging the Middle East into war. During the peak of the conflict, Iran virtually blocked off the Strait of Hormuz, a critical waterway for global energy transit, sending energy costs rocketing and forcing US households and businesses to grapple with steep fuel prices.

Although restrictions were temporarily eased after both sides agreed to a preliminary deal in June, the US military relaunched its blockade of Tehran’s ports this week. Oil prices have resumed their upward trajectory after US President Donald Trump declared the ceasefire over.

Reacting to the report, the Chief US Economist at Pantheon Macroeconomics, Samuel Tombs, described the Wednesday data as “broadly reassuring”.

“The big question of how much of the surge in energy prices feeds through to consumer prices will take several more months to answer,” Tombs warned in an investor note, adding that he expects the costs of finished consumer goods, excluding food and energy, to climb further.

The decline in wholesale prices follows a consumer price index report released a day earlier, which similarly showed consumer inflation cooling in June before the renewed hostilities in the Middle East. “It’s too soon to say inflation will ease sharply in the back half of 2026,” said Nationwide financial market economist Oren Klachkin. He warned that as global oil prices move higher, resurgent energy costs could continue to push consumer inflation upward in the coming months.
