The Revenue Mobilization Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) has finalized a new remuneration package for political office holders, including ministers and elected officials, and submitted it to the President for onward transmission to the National Assembly.
The move follows a 2023 proposal for a 114% increase in basic salaries to address, as the RMAFC claims, the outdated 2008 salary structure, despite public backlash regarding economic hardship.
The RMAFC announced on February 5, 2026, that it has completed the review of salaries and allowances for political, public, and judicial office holders.
The proposal has been submitted to the President via the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF).
In June 2023, the RMAFC recommended a 114% salary increase for elected officials.
The review aims to address the fact that salaries have remained unchanged since 2008, despite high inflation and economic challenges.
The proposed increase has generated significant public anger, with organizations like SERAP urging a halt to the increase given current economic conditions.
In 2024, judicial officer salaries were removed from the general political office holder act and placed under a separate law.
The new proposal will soon be forwarded to the National Assembly for legislative action.
