The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) is championing a transition to eco-friendly telecommunications infrastructure, positioning the sector at the forefront of Nigeria’s drive for sustainability and cost efficiency.

At an industry conference, in Lagos, the Commission unveiled its renewed commitment to the Green Telecoms Initiative, a strategy designed to reduce the telecom sector’s reliance on carbon-intensive power sources and promote the adoption of renewable energy solutions.

Speaking at the event, the Executive Vice-Chairman of the NCC, Aminu Maida, said the initiative represents a major shift towards balancing rapid digital expansion with environmental responsibility.

He noted that Nigeria’s telecommunications sector now sits at a critical intersection where connectivity must align with sustainability goals.

According to Maida, the adoption of renewable energy to power telecom towers and infrastructure could significantly cut operational costs for network providers.

Industry projections indicate that operators may achieve between 30 and 50 percent reduction in energy-related expenses, a development expected to improve service delivery and long-term sector viability, according to the NCC boss.

He emphasized that while telecommunications remains the backbone of Nigeria’s digital economy, it must also evolve into a driver of environmental stewardship.

The expansion of digital infrastructure, he added, comes with a responsibility to reduce carbon emissions and embrace cleaner technologies.

The Green Telecoms Initiative also promotes infrastructure sharing among operators, a move aimed at reducing duplication, lowering costs, and minimizing environmental impact,he told the gathering.

He said that in addition, the NCC is encouraging better management of electronic waste generated by telecom equipment, as part of broader sustainability efforts.

To strengthen accountability, Maida said the Commission is advancing Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) reporting standards across the sector.

He expressed optimism that this effort will enhance transparency and ensure that sustainability practices are embedded in telecom operations.

Stakeholders at the forum expressed strong support for the initiative, noting that the future of connectivity lies in green, energy-efficient solutions.

They stressed that immediate action is necessary to secure a sustainable and resilient digital ecosystem.

According to them, with rising energy costs and growing environmental concerns, the NCC’s push for green telecoms signals a transformative shift one that could redefine how Nigeria powers its digital economy while safeguarding the environment.
