American R&B singer, Freddie Jackson, whose romantic ballads included “You Are My Lady” and “Rock Me Tonight”, has died at 69.

His family announced his death on Tuesday, October 6, saying he died the previous night. The statement was shared through his official social media account.

“It is with profound sadness and heavy hearts that we share the passing of our beloved Freddie Jackson,” the family said.

Some early reports gave his age as 70. However, iHeart’s updated report said his family confirmed he was 69.

Jackson’s breakthrough came with his 1985 debut album, Rock Me Tonight. The title track and “You Are My Lady” established him among the prominent voices of 1980s R&B.

He followed that success with songs including “Tasty Love”, “Have You Ever Loved Somebody”, “Jam Tonight” and “Do Me Again”. His debut and its follow-up, Just Like the First Time, both achieved platinum status.

The Recording Academy records two Grammy nominations for Jackson at the 1986 awards, for Best New Artist and Best Male R&B Vocal Performance for “You Are My Lady”.

Jackson had publicly disclosed a kidney disease diagnosis in 2024. His family has not announced a cause of death or established a connection to that condition.

In its statement, the family remembered his generosity and affection for his fans, friends and relatives. It also thanked listeners who supported his recordings and performances throughout his career.

Details of funeral arrangements and plans to honour the singer will be announced later, the family said.
