Putin’s Ambitions ‘Might Not Stop’ At Ukraine – Boris Johnson

Vladimir Putin’s ambitions “might not stop” after his invasion of Ukraine, Boris Johnson warned yesterday as ministers, MPs and former security chiefs suggested the UK could be “drawn in” to a wider conflict with Russia.

The Prime Minister told Nato leaders the Russian President was “engaging in a revanchist mission to over-turn post-Cold War order”.

“He warned the group that the Russian President’s ambitions might not stop there and that this was a Euro-Atlantic crisis with global consequences,” a Downing Street spokeswoman said after Mr Johnson’s call with allies.

But Mr Johnson urged the world to “make certain President Putin would fail in this act of aggression” and outlined the UK’s “new offer” to bolster Nato’s defences in Baltic nations on the alliance’s eastern flank.

It came as Defence Secretary Ben Wallace suggested Vladimir Putin “won’t stop” after invading Ukraine as he “doesn’t believe the Baltic states are really countries”.

An attack on the three countries – Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania – could draw the UK into conflict under Nato’s mutual defence commitments.

Meanwhile, former Navy head Lord West of Spithead warned that while “none of us wants to have a greater war… clearly there is a possibility” as he called on the Government to boost defence spending to 3 per cent of gross domestic product (GDP).

Ex-Nato secretary-general Lord Robertson of Port Ellen warned Mr Putin had become “irrational” and a “monster”.

He stressed that the UK must “imprint in the mind” of the Russian President the “inviolability” of the Nato Article 5 guarantee of collective defence “and the danger to his motherland if they ever thought of crossing that line”.

Earlier, Mr Johnson used a call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to pledge further UK defensive support to his besieged country to slow down the Russian invasion “in the coming days”.

The Prime Minister also urged the leaders of countries in the Joint Expeditionary Force – Iceland, Norway, Denmark, Finland, Sweden, Estonia, Lithuania, the Netherlands and Latvia – to give more support to Ukraine “as a matter of the greatest urgency” as Russian troops

Downing Street refused to say what support the UK would provide but said it had already sent protective equipment such as helmets and body armour as well as lethal aid such as anti-tank weapons.

Defence Minister James Heappey said anti-tank missiles had “already proven to be invaluable” in the war and said it would be “high on our list of things that we are looking to supply”.

Former National Security Adviser Lord Sedwill meanwhile urged the UK to go further including by “dismantling intelligence networks around the world on which Russia depends and which we dismantled after the Salisbury attack but many others didn’t”.

Russia expert Bob Seely said it was “unlikely” Mr Putin would go into the Baltic states but warned there was a danger of miscalculation.

He told i: “It will be a mess for years, and the danger is whether we get drawn in either now, six months down the line or in a year. It could go badly wrong.

“We know Russian jets often fly close to Nato airspace and they do not always turn on their transponders.

“What happens when a jet crashes into a plane full of Americans leaving Tallinn? The new Cold War started in 2007 but the Government is only just getting round to noticing it.”
