Ogun Student Teacher Attempts Suicide After She “Accidentally” Damaged Pupil’s Eye

A 400-level student of Tai Solarin University, Ijebu Ode, Adeola Adeyemo, has attempted suicide after she accidentally damaged her pupil’s eye with her cane.

Adeyemo, a student-teacher attached to Owiwi Nursery and Primary School, Obada Oko was reportedly addressing the class on Tuesday, December 2, when a pupil, Alao Idera, ran into the cane she was holding, injuring her right eye.

The Police Public Relations Officer of the State, Omolola Odutola, confirmed the unfortunate incident, stating that the child was immediately rushed to the Federal Medical Center in Abeokuta, where she underwent surgery to remove the affected eye.

According to Odutola, the mother of the victim, Illesami Christiana, reported the case at about 3 pm on Tuesday, leading to the arrest of the student teacher.

“The teacher didn’t flog her; the student didn’t commit anything, just the way that teachers hold a cane and talk to pupils, the victim rushed into the cane. But the question is why was she holding a cane? Primary 6, 11 years old. She was operated on at FMC and the right eye was removed.

“The student-teacher (Adeola Adeyemo), on hearing the situation of her pupil, attempted suicide by drinking a harmful substance, but the police rushed her to hospital and she is now stable.

“She is currently being interrogated” she added.
